I'm not on the STEEM Hive train yet. Are you?

I've had some of my friends here start using this new beta hive thing and ask me to join. I first heard of this at STEEMFest and was encouraged to be an early adopter and start my own hive.

So far, I am not biting, and here is why.

  • I am not an early adopter of anything. You go first and then let me know.
  • What is the actual point of this? Are communities like fb groups or something else?
  • I understand that the "hive" tag needs to be in the first position to count. I do not want to have "hive" as my first tag. I use that spot to let me know what dApp I posted with, and I am set in my ways.
  • I understand you can only post to one hive at a time. What's up with that?
  • I have a lot of tags I use already on my posts. These are all for tokens and tribes. So why do I need hives now too? Does it pay me in upvotes or tokens if I use them?
  • Apparently the hives are only using steemit (for what?). I will wait until they are on steempeak or esteem.

I'm not negative on hives - I am just not educated and really too sick to delve into something new right now.

Please tell me what's up with these hives and why you have started using them if you have. Why do you recommend them? Any info at all will be gratefully accepted.

My photos for this post are both from back in my days in San Diego. I have no photos of hives, so bees and honey will have to do :)

I think a cautious attitude is never wrong :)

Although it is good to be a pioneer or to be part of "early adoption", I have to admit that I am a bit of the "old school" style, in which we maintain a healthy distrust and observe things before getting into trouble.

Also, the limitations that have the Hives in the Beta are a bit annoying, that the exclusivity of the publication only for a hive is something that I do not like, at least in the case of the tribes it could be shared with several at the same time Thanks to the labeling. Even less I like to have to use the Hive label first, because for now its format is not very descriptive in the other frontend, being something like hive-xxxxxxxx ... I don't know, but I don't find it attractive. I read somewhere that this is going to be modified by the time of its release from the Beta phase, but we'll see if it is fulfilled.

ps.
I've been working together with my friend @crypto.piotr and few other guys on non-profit community project build on steem blockchain. It's called @project.hope

Please allow me to share with you link to our latest article, where we're explaining our economy and our goals. Your feedback and comment would be greatly appreciated.

I was told that descriptive tags are coming too, @pedrobrito2004. The hive tag really annoys me since you cannot tell what it is supposed to be. I completely agree that using it in the first position is not a choice I plan to make.

I am inundated with all kinds of requests for @project.hope these days, and this too is getting on my last nerve. I have looked at the project a few times. I am not joining for a variety of reasons and do not appreciate the constant reminders of it from all angles.

Ops!
Sorry if it bothers, it happens that I have it as a kind of automatic signature, I will try not to disturb.

That is quite a signature, @pedrobrito2004. I would be cautious with using it.

Thanks!

Yeah the random hive number is confusing as well as it is not memorable like an actual word tag.

Agreed! I already have to use all the tribe tags - topic tags are a thing of the past lol.

My tweet for #posh #oc is here:

I'm not on the STEEM Hive train yet. Are you?

Yep.

It is more Reddit like than FB Groups to me. There is a cool Community of interest to me called Learning Python whose objective is for "Sharing experiences learning Python programming". This will be a moderated area with no trolling, spamming or bully downvoting. Perhaps you are not a programmer yet there is likely simular spaces for subjects of more interest to you.

Well, I have never been on Reddit, so I am not sure what that is like, @novacadian. If the hives branch off from steemit and onto better dApps, I will give it a try. I am not sure how this is different from just posting on steem, but I guess I will have to try.

Give the following link a try to see if anything is of interest at this point of time; keeping in mind it is only beta at this point. The link lists all available communities at this time.

https://beta.steemit.com/communities

Well, first off, you get to ugly old school looking steemit from this link, @novacadian. And second, looking at a few of the hives I am involved with shows very incomplete results. I think I am better off searching tags in steempeak if I want to see posts in those areas.

Roger that.

I am a user of the powerhousecreatives hive tag and the new freewriters hive tag. I assume after the next hard fork the tags will look prettier and be the name of the communities. I understand that the communities have more control over who can post within them (so although there is nothing to stop someone using any hive tag, you won't show up in the community if you have been banned or whatever so you won't get upvotes).

PS you are an early adopter of steem (and cryptocurrency in general) in the grand scheme of things!

Hmm... still not getting why using a tag does anything different, @felt.buzz. And I am not really exclusive in my searches, I want to see all the posts. The powerhousecreatives group is way too exclusive for me. I would be kicked out in a day if I ever tried to join, lol.

Yes, I do feel very avant-guard re: crypto :)

I think those communities will be related somehow with SMT that's why I'm building @dcooperation there. Also I saw a post somewhere telling that we will not earn steem in the future, but only SMT's. So, we can of joining communities now in beta.steemit to be ready to support their SMT in the future. So, just like you are earning tokens in steem-engine, you will earn SMT, but those will be much faster and the price of SMT's maybe much higher as well. Because SMT's are built directly on steem, but not on steem-engine.

Each SMT will have its own rules of curation and distributing the rewards. That's why we will have to choose the right communities to support, just like we are supporting some tribes. Hive is kind of communities on beta.steemit related directly to steem and I think that will make steem great again. For now they are just testing it. So, we are all testors and when SMT's will work, I think that's all will be moved to the main website steemit.com and it will be like reddit, but on steem.

You can see in another comment on this post, that I just got a list of the hives, if you care to take a look, @clixmoney.

I try not to guess what is going to happen in forks. If steem/sp/sbd goes away, I will deal with it when it happens. I can't take the time to deal with this smt thing that has been in the works for almost 3 years now. If it comes - I will adjust then. Today, I work with what we have.

What if they give up on this hive thing? Then what?

Then it will be hard to make steem great again. We all wish for the best for steem, but we can't control that. It's not in our hands simple minnows or people who are trying just to create good content, invite people to steem and pay our bills to keep living. Let's hope for the best.

True - there is not much we can do when the big guys are so big. Hopefully we get more little ones soon.

Interesting read. I especially like your "what I do on steem". It would be cool to see others do something similar.

Thank you so much for the comment, @wanderingmoon. I am glad you like my footer. I was not sure about it, and you give me a boost :)

Dear @fitinfun

I've testes HIVES and in current form I don't see much use for them.

Those who think about launching their own tribe will have a very hard time attracting authors to post within their tribes. Especially if they will end up competing with current and well established ones. Like SteemLeo or 3speak.

Tribes are also not well organized - just like you've mentioned - adding some random looking tag as our main tag doesn't look well.

Insteaf seeing hive-12345, I would rather like to see name of community that is related to this particular hive ID. For instance 'Roses and flowers community'. It's cannot be that hard to do little programming and make it more visually attractive. Seeing tag HIVE-number doesn't tell me anything.

Upvoted already,
Yours, Piotr

I know they will have real names once they are out of beta, @crypto.piotr. This was mentioned at steemfest. I have more info since writing this post, and will have another one out soon. I'm getting on board with the larger and more established hives, and getting good upvotes from it. So I will give my strategies for other minnows to try as well. Stay tuned :)
