This phrase is something I used to see at planning meetings for various things I worked on in accounting and volunteering over the ears.
“What are our core values? Let’s all break up into groups and hash it out so we can put this information on brochures.”
I do not enjoy this type of reflection. I am more of the type to take action and then look back to see what happened. Point to a target, no matter how nebulous and take steps of achieve a goal. I feel like this tactic has served me well most of the time.
When someone told me I should be a bookkeeper or accountant in my early 20's, I took a six week course at an extension college in Introductory Bookkeeping. It was cheap and close and I decided to do it. I did not even know what bookkeeping was, but I saw the ad for the course right it the time someone told me to do it.
Howls went up from everyone I knew.
“You can’t learn bookkeeping in six weeks!”
“Yes need to go to a real college!”
“You are wasting your time!”
“You are wasting your money!”
I just took the course anyway.
It turned out to be a highlight of my life.
The teacher wa sexcellent and explained Debits and Credits in a novel way I later found out was not how they are usually taught. I picked right up on it and never had a problem with debits and credits again. I later found out this is a huge sticking point for people even after getting out of college with an accounting degree. I taught this method to maybe hundreds of people over the years and was thanked profusely each time.
So were becoming an accountant, going to college, working in an office, teaching other people core values to me? Mot when I stumbled into that course which ended up changing my life.
