Ikan coelacanth semula diduga telah punah jutaan tahun yang lalu. Akan tetapi, pada tahun 1938, seorang nelayan di Afrika menangkap ikan ini. Ikan ini dipastikan coelacanth oleh profesor smith seorang ahli hewan purba dari Afrika Selatan.
