S. Martinho foi um cavaleiro monge e mais tarde considerado santo, que viveu no sec. IV. Reza a lenda que num dia frio e chuvoso, encontrou um mendigo que lhe pediu esmola. S. Martinho, como nao tinha mais nada consigo, tirou o seu manto e, com a sua espada, cortou metade e deu ao mendigo para se agasalhar. Nesse momento a tempestade desapareceu e o sol voltou a raiar.
Esse milagre ficou conhecido como o "verão de S. Martinho". É por esse motivo que todos os anos, no dia 11 de Novembro, comemoramos o dia de S. Martinho, celebrando a data com um magusto, onde se comem castanhas e bebe-se água pé.
