Post Office Etiquette

in #etiquette8 years ago

I do my best to avoid the post office, but occasionally I need to send documents by certified mail to a taxing agency. The reason I have to send it certified is to prove the postmark date - you can't imagine how often the IRS (and other tax agencies) get the date wrong and send you a letter with penalties and balances due for "late filing". You then have to prove you postmarked it by the due date - such a pain in the rear.

Anyway, I had to go to to the post office and had a situation happen and which has happened before, but not sure how to navigate it - essentially, what is the right post office etiquette?

I walked in and nobody was in line, except that one person at the counter with the post office employee. Seemed straightforward, but the problem was that were two people who were next to the line packaging up boxes for mailing with tape, etc.

One of them finished their boxing before I was called up to the counter. I decided to let them go in front of me, as they were technically in the post office first. Should I have done that? One one hand, them being unprepared would make it so it is OK for me to be in front of them. On the other hand, they were technically in the post office first, and I am not sure if they had already been to the counter or not (I have often seen people get supplies from the post office employee and then step aside to seal up the package as a convenience to others).

I only lost a few minutes of my time so I suppose it is not that big a deal. Any opinions on what I should do in the future?

Take care,
Brian

Don’t worry about letting those back in line. If they came unprepared, they can get in line once they are prepared. If they already stood in line and had to step aside to fix something, the postal workers usually just let them back up to the window when they are done (so they don’t have to wait in line again).
