Facebook owns up to responsibility for one “third party”.

in #facebook8 years ago

Facebook has owned up responsibility to the consequences of one of its “third party” applications.
This essay reviews that mea culpa.

To comply with American law, in 2012, SCL Group created a US arm: Cambridge Analytica, with Robert Mercer.
Founded in 1993 by Nigel Oakes, formerly of Saatchi & Saatchi, SCL’s board includes Lord Ivar Mountbatten, third cousin to Queen Elizabeth; CEO Roger Gabb, former British special forces & Tory contributor; President Sir Geoffrey Pattie former defence undersecretary; & Chairman Julian Wheatland, chairman of Oxfordshire Conservatives Association.
Jonathan Marland, former UK trade envoy is a shareholder. Tory donor Vincent Tchenguiz; Sir James Allen Mitchell, privy counsellor since 1985; Rear Admiral John Tolhurst, former assistant director of naval warfare, ADC to the Queen; & Gavin McNicoll, creator of Eden Intelligence have been associated with the SCL Group.
       Cambridge Analytica’s parent is
embedded in the deep state on
       both sides of the Atlantic.

The sales pitch.

A data driven Trump campaign.

• Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Brexit & every major election campaign from the late 20th century onwards, mined big data.
• Cambridge Analytica’s data feed was sourced from voluntarily shared information, which was used for a different purpose than for which it was collected.
• Data was mined from friends of friends, without their consent.

The hard sell

The misrepresentation

• Project Ripon, Cambridge Analytica’s psychological profiling technology platform was developed by Canadian software company AggregateIQ; not Cambridge Analytica nor its parent Strategic Communication Laboratories (now renamed SCL Group).
• Cambridge Analytica did not correct impression that it is a software developer. It did not communicate that it merely markets the Ripon tech.
• Cambridge Analytica’s parent, SCL Group uses behavioral research to conduct influence operations for of military & political clients worldwide.

Situational ethics

Before he was suspended, Cambridge Analytica CEO Alexander Nix respnded to BBC Newsnight on accusations of Cambridge Analytica’s Facebook data breach.

Cambridge Analytica& SCL were not acting as proxies for the Russian state but rather for significant sections of the US/UK military intelligence apparatus. Questions we need to have
       simple English answers for:

Why is my data being collected?
        What data is being collected?
What will you use my data for?
Who do you share my data with,

                   in the future?

Caveat emptor turns into caveat venditor

When you approach your community amorally.

Roger McNamee, Mark Zuckerberg’s long-time mentor, saw the risk early on and tried to get Facebook executives to manage it, but his warnings fell on deaf ears. In an interview with Christiane Amanpour, McNamee said that in October 2016, he personally warned Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg of the magnitude of the risk, but failed to get their attention. According to McNamee, Facebook’s leaders kept arguing that Facebook is a platform company, not a media company and “we’re not responsible for what third parties do.” McNamee warned them then, “You have 1.7 billion members and if they decide you are responsible, it won’t matter what the law says.”

Its what the buyers (users) think that still counts.
