Great points made though but I think this is relative and it's as a result of the change society has undergone over the years. In areas where there is so much technological advancements and increased social vices, parents out of insecurity develop these styles(helicopter and lawnmowing) in order to protect their kids which in turn affects these kids adversely. On my trip to some parts of Africa, I realised that this was exactly opposite. But I think this whole issue is kind of intricate because it's the response of humans to the dynamics of society.

Of course I can only write from my perspective in this matter. How kids are allowed to be will be different around the world and you will find places that are the opposite of others.
