Your name is Tom; you live in San Francisco, California. You are badly in debt, so you have to make some quick money. You decide to sign up for a clinical trial to help your future career as an engineer.
You sign up with the conditions agreed to by Dr. Mark Monroe. He explains to you all the details you will need to know, and even provides a lot of financial aid to help with the whole ordeal. This seems to be the perfect opportunity for you, so you decide to go ahead with the process. He says you will be monitored twenty-four hours a day, and inside the clinic, you'll be implanted with a number of electronic devices. It seems incredibly easy to sign up for this. Then you walk out of the clinic, and into your first day in the trial.
For the first few days of your trial, you don't have much to worry about. The monitoring is almost nonexistent, and you have the opportunity to go outside of the clinic. You encounter a few people, and a few of them even seem to know you. For a few hours, you are allowed to walk around the city without any restrictions, as though you were actually just a normal person. You make it to some places you never would have seen, and see some things you had little or no idea of seeing.
On day five, events drastically change. Without warning, you are led into a room, where Dr. Monroe stands with a worried look on his face. The door is locked behind you, and the room turns on a light for the first time. The doctor explains that many people have found the electronica on their person to be incredibly annoying. You are to keep this a secret, as you're to blame for it. This new electronic device is called the Dopamine Ring, or, 'D-Ring,' for short. He explains that this new device would be implanted into your body to protect you from the electronica. They are fairly safe, but will ever so slightly change your bio-chemical reaction of dopamine in your body. Dr. Monroe offers you a chance to go back, retrieve the old electronics, which you willingly do.
It seems afterwards that no one knows you did the swap, so you go back to your regular life. You have finished your time at the clinic and have no idea what the new electronics are, but you are happy that you were able to successfully get them out of your body. You find out you have your old D-Ring, but no explanation of how it got back in.
Soon after, you start to notice some weird things. Your behavior has changed. Your personality is strange, as though you are someone else. You try to talk to people about this, but they don't really react. You begin to notice physical changes as well. You have long hair and a longer beard, which are even more noticeable since the D-Ring was inserted into your body. You decide to cut it, as you like the feel of it. The D-Ring seems to have given you a lot of power and confidence, so you decide to keep it.
You soon realize that the bi-polar personality has been a really positive change: your emotions are much easier to control. You even notice that you don't ever get sick! You are more emotionally stable, and the amount and strength of your dopamine levels have changed. It has become so much easier to make decisions. Combined with a slight boost in your senses, this is why everyone thinks you're strange.
You walk around with a strange, muscular look to yourself. Your brain is growing more and more quickly, as though you have been put through some sort of enhancement. It is as though you have been born again, with a greater purpose in life. You thought it was just a side effect of the D-Ring, until you realize that instead of getting taller, you have gotten wider.
After a while, you start to notice the changes to your muscles. You realize that the D-Ring gives you extra strength, allowing you to lift things or pull bigger weights. This is pretty cool, so you continue to enhance your power. You also notice that your strength is correlated to how much adrenaline you have, as well as how much dopamine is being pumped through your veins.
You can't be sure of what is going on, but you are certain that you are growing stronger at an alarming rate. The change is obvious to others, as you begin to get more and more attention. You begin to worry for a moment, remembering that you agreed to the D-Ring's host system. You are really worried about what the consequences are going to be.
You decide to opt out of the D-Ring program, as you have reached all of your limits. You try to explain to Dr. Monroe, but he doesn't feel comfortable having the D-Ring removed from your body. He asks you if it is dangerous inside your body, and you are unable to give him a definite answer. You agree to resign from the program, but you're concerned about what is going to happen. You hide your D-Ring to keep others from finding it, but it doesn't last long.
