The flying machine

In the dim evening light of this alien and unfamiliar world you realize that you are standing ankle deep in a sea of mud, looking for your friends. You're holding on to what you think is a long stick, but turns out to be an alien creature rearing back to attack you. You strike out at it with your improvised weapon only to bring about a whole new host of troubles as you send the little creature sprawling into the mud, bringing about a rain of other creatures like the one you just struck.

They are not happy about you alerting their larger brethren and one of them has you pinned down and wrapped up in a matter of moments. You desperately try to push the creature off of you only to quickly discover that no matter which way you move, you are surrounded by another nest of creatures. One is holding a rock in each hand and it appears that it has one of them on its way down, ready to crush you. You look around frantically, trying to figure out what to do, when you spot something much more interesting: a large oddly shaped rock, resting alone in the middle of the pond. It appears to be fairly well worn, but isn't something you recognize at all. It looks as if it has a great deal of history, as if all of the surrounding creatures were trying to protect it.

You try to look a bit closer, trying to figure it out, when one of the creatures squeezing the life out of you wrenches you around unnaturally far, forcing you to your feet and drawing your attention back to it. You notice a small opening in the creature's armor and you look for a moment down at the strange device hanging from your neck. It's familiar, but you can't place it. You feel as if you should know exactly what it is at a moment's glance, but something just won't let you focus that detail.

The creature holding you is looking at you with what you assume is some form of understanding. It's face is kind, and strangely ageless. It understands that you're looking at the device around your neck and quickly speaks out to one of the other creatures in the nest of creatures surrounding you. They all seem amazed, but not surprised. They obviously know exactly what this strange object means.

The creature holding them is telling another one of the nest of creatures what to do and it does so immediately.

The one holding you lets you drop back to your knees, and the one that had been holding a rock on its way down, suddenly seems to realize that the situation has changed. It releases the rock, which goes tumbling off in a puff of activated dust. The creature holding the rock is visibly stunned, as though nothing like that has ever happened to it before.

The one that was telling them what to do is glad to let it go, as it seems to understand that you are no longer in danger; at least not from itself.

The creature that dropped the rock is still not sure what to do. They all look at each other, and you, with new eyes, as if this was the first time they've ever seen it. You are still at a loss to explain this occurrence to yourself as well.

The one that dropped the rock looks at its fingers and pulls them back as if they were burned, but you can tell that it isn't hurt at all, just scared. The creature stops for a moment, seeming to remember something, and then jumps into the mud to start pulling things out of the mud. The creatures all look at him with a clear sense of shock and horror. You can see it on their faces like a writing on their faces. They all see the same thing that you see. The creature in the mud is so young.

You can see it, plain as day, burning its eyes into the creature that handed it a rock, no matter what the older one says. It seems to be a disharmony, a discord between the two. It is obvious to you that these creatures do not get along with each other in the least. The creature bouncing back and forth in the mud is clearly a source of pain to the older one.

The two look at you, and the one in the mud begins to cry, saying "we make a weapon." You can tell that this creature does not realize how to make a weapon. The creature with the rock is completely different from the others in the nest. This is not their nest, not at all. You can tell that it has lived here a very long time, and that it was one of the oldest animals here on this planet. It is a creature of knowledge, an ancient being that has obviously lived a long time here. A poor creation of evolution, this planet does not have the tools necessary to create something like them. Creature that are small, like this smaller one is, have to be built in the mud, as with the larger creatures. But apparently this smaller one keeps forgetting that when they would fall outside of their pile.

The one in the mud cries, still not understanding that they can't make weapons like they used to, and then frenzies, pulling more and more objects out of the mud, all of them items that should have been consumed by the older one. It pulls a small one and a large screech rat out of the mud, but it doesn't really do anything to them. They seem more like pets to it than anything. You can tell that the creature is lost without a tribe to protect it. It is hungry for affection, not willing to accept the fact that the way it feels drives it to create chaos.

The creature that handed it the rock, looks at the one in the mud with a look that is entirely lost. It looks at the one with the rock in its hand, and then at the one in the mud, and then finally at you. You see it writing the story of its life, trying to understand what just happened
