Global Organizations Welcome the Closure of Dairy Farms Abusing Cows as Fines Reach £100,000

British authorities, in cooperation with animal rights organizations, have announced the closure of a significant number of dairy farms across various parts of the country. This comes after extensive investigations revealed serious violations of animal rights, including the abuse of cows and forcing them to produce excessive amounts of milk under inhumane conditions.

The decision followed the release of a shocking report by Animal Equality on July 10. The report included undercover footage and photos documenting harsh practices at more than twelve commercial dairy farms. The materials showed cows being beaten and electrocuted, in addition to being deprived of adequate rest and proper nutrition in order to increase milk production.

In a press statement, PETA UK confirmed that these practices are not isolated incidents but rather reflect a widespread culture of exploitation within the traditional dairy industry. The organization called for stricter monitoring and tougher laws to protect animals from commercial abuse.

According to the UK Environmental and Food Safety Authority, nine farms have been shut down so far. Their owners face official charges of violations and could face fines of up to £100,000, along with potential criminal penalties.

Organizations such as Compassion in World Farming and World Animal Protection welcomed the move, describing it as the beginning of a new awareness in how food-producing animals are treated. They also called on the government to support alternative farms that use humane practices and to promote plant-based milk consumption as a sustainable and ethical option.

It is worth noting that plant-based milk sales have increased by 22 percent in the first half of 2025, according to a report by the Plant-Based Food Association, reflecting a gradual shift in consumer behavior toward products that respect the environment and animal welfare.
