Pineapples have been pretty popular since the hit comedy show Psych aired. What do pineapples have to do with a comedic murder mystery show that features a hyper-observant individual faking to be a Psychic for the local police department? The cast and crew decided early on that they would feature a pineapple somewhere in every episode. Sometimes in plain site and sometimes you'd have to look pretty hard to find it (for instance, in one episode, the main characters are at a restaurant and an extra in the background was drinking from a pineapple). It's kind of like a "Where's Waldo" in every episode, if you will.
It's been a few years since the show ended, but the large mass of Psych-Os (what serious Psych fans, such as myself, are lovingly called) live on. And we continue to watch reruns and quote lines from Psych on a regular basis. As well as buy merchandise we come across donning pineapples, which means a lot of Psych-Os are going broke right now because of the huge surge of pineapple items being sold at practically every major retailer right now. Everything from kitchen towels to book ends, backpacks to jewelry (such as in my Etsy shop www.froufrouroom.com).
But, really, why are pineapples so popular right now? Not everyone is a Psych fan and it's been off-air for some time. I read an article by a writer in the UK that suspects pineapples are being used as a decorative theme especially among people in their 20s to 30s since pineapples used to represent wealth and prosperity (and most of us in our 20s and 30s are far from wealthy), as pineapples were only attainable by the wealthy and were often gifts to royalty. In modern times, only people with money like Bill Gates were indulging in the tasty fruit.
I have a theory; designers are with the "in crowd" in Hollywood and I think they're aware that Psych is making a comeback via a Psych movie in December 2017. They know a lot of people like Psych as well as the beloved Psych symbol, the pineapple. Perhaps, these designers are Psych fans themselves. Top designers set the stage for what's trendy. It's just a theory, but maybe these designers are setting the stage for the Psych comeback and are cashing in on it in return.
