Americans are born and bred on famous products like Big Macs, Slurpees and Cheetos, to the point that junk food has been elevated to an art form. But in this age of political correctness, is mocking fat people a good idea?
As an American living abroad, it’s hard not to feel a sense of shame when the United States looks bad, really bad, on the world stage. It’s even worse when we crush the world stage to splinters just by standing on it. Yet, as citizens of the so-called ‘indispensable nation,’ we rarely admit to our faults, or allow outsiders to draw attention to them. Indeed, America’s sense of self-worth and gift of navel-gazing is world renowned, which is very ironic since many of us are so fat we can’t find our navels.
While it’s hardly breaking news that Americans are now engaged in an epic battle of the bulge, what is truly astounding is how widespread the problem has become. Obesity in the land of Golden Arches has exploded by 70% over the last three decades for adults and by 85% over the same time period for children. Today, almost 100 million Americans are clinically obese. Yet, it seems the more that Americans address the problem – remember Michele Obama’s disastrous school lunch program? – the worse the situation becomes. We just yawn and stretch and loosen the belt to accommodate the bursting national waistline.
I've lost over 100 lbs. twice in my life. Once in my 20's & again in my 60's. So please believe me when I say the root cause of America's weight problem is Capitalism. Madison Avenue uses science that works for profits with little regard to the resulting real costs of feeding us poisons.
This is so unbelievably absurd and against all common sense. How did it become possible that 100 mio people are clinically obese and yet even mentioning the problem is a taboo??
In Europe we face a totally different problem, but the principles of thought control and mass manipulation are similar (the mass immigration, if you warn you are a right hate speecher).
But while in Europe the Elites have a strong interest in covering up the population exchange, the US government should not have an interest in such a national epidemic. I don´t get it, why politicians are not counteracting the PC.
Great article! So many truths here.. I have also seen this and am now writing an ebook to try to help people who want to get there health back under control. I honestly dont know what else to do to try to help change this epidemic, its so sad to see. Thanks for the being honest RT!
Well if they want to remain protected while getting fat that's there right. I think it is a form of self-harm and a result of a deeper psychological issue the ease of access and oversupply just makes it practical to medicate yourself this way.
Crazy that this is a problem while the rest of the world starves.
If 17-19,000 people in the US are dying each year from "illegal" drugs and 40,000 die from sugar (more addictive than cocaine), what drugs should the "war on drugs" really be focused on?
Food is a problem yes, but also the lack of activity. Most people just sit around all day and hardly move. I'm fortunate enough that my job keeps me active but that's pretty unusual.
