El mielero verde (Chlorophanes spiza) es una especie de ave de la familia Thraupidae que habita en la zona intertropical de América, desde México hasta Bolivia. Es el único miembro de su género, Chlorophanes.

The green honeycreeper (Chlorophanes spiza) is a small bird in the tanager family. It is found in the tropical New World from southern Mexico south to Bolivia. It is the only member of the genus Chlorophanes.

El mielero verde mide unos 14 cm de largo y pesa alrededor de 17 g. En general, es un ave de pico largo, fuerte y curvado, con la mandíbula inferior amarilla y la superior oscura. La cola es relativamente corta y las patas son grises.

The green honeycreeper is 13–14 cm (5-5.5 in) long and weighs 14 to 23 grams, averaging about 19 grams. It has a long decurved bill.

El macho es principalmente de plumaje azul-verde con la cabeza negra (excepto la nuca y la garganta). La cola y las alas son oscuras, pero con las plumas bordeadas de verde. El ojo es de color rojo.

The male is mainly blue-tinged green with a black head and a mostly bright yellow bill.

Las hembras y los ejemplares jóvenes poseen un plumaje completamente verde, amarillento en las partes ventrales. El ojo de las hembras es más oscuro que el de los machos.

The female green honeycreeper is grass-green, paler on the throat, and lacks the male’s iridescence and black head. Immatures are plumaged similar to females. The call is a sharp chip.

El mielero verde es menos dependiente del néctar que sus parientes del género Cyanerpes, siendo sus principales alimentos la fruta (60%), néctar (20%) e insectos (15%).

It is less heavily dependent on nectar than the other honeycreepers, fruit being its main food (60%), with nectar (20%) and insects (15%) as less important components of its diet.

La hembra del mielero verde construye un pequeño nido en la copa de un árbol, e incuba unos huevos marrones-blancos durante 13 días.

This is a forest canopy species. The female green honeycreeper builds a small cup nest in a tree, and incubates the clutch of two brown-blotched white eggs for 13 days.
