A Protracted Scheme

in #fiction2 years ago

When it was discovered that the human mind was capable of producing an infinite number of thoughts, arbitrary in laws yet undeviating in consistency with the laws of physics, the human brain was seen as having the potential of becoming a limitless source of energy. The very mind that is capable of thinking an infinite number of thoughts with limitless possibility can one day be tapped as a source of limitless energy. Though the natural progress of technology has brought the world to an age where many things once considered science fiction are now a reality, this particular dream of off-the-grid energy production still remains as far out of reach as ever.

It goes without saying that the concept of mind extractors is still seen as taboo, even where mind recording devices are considered but more often than not, a commercial item, as was the one resting on the desk of Grant Mason, a man who discerned the flaws of the brain source energy scheme, quite different from what the public knows of it. A sizable population of human beings would be stripped of all their thoughts, creativity and individualism under the scheme most knew of, or would assume to be the best solution to providing the world with an infinite source of energy

Grant saw a different way. He believed in separating the negative thoughts from the good ones and using the good ones to power the world, but disturbing no one. The thought of extracting good ideas and using them to improve one’s self are things the public has been familiarized with for centuries. People who learn an art form, learning a skill or a trade, have been using the concept of repurposing the worst thoughts of other people and using those thoughts to fuel their own creative process. So thought the public, that was where the idea of mind source energy came from, people processing the thoughts of other people to create things, most of which they themselves could not process.

Grant believed there was a better way. He believed in isolating good thoughts and amplifying the positive thoughts while suppressing the negative ones, and using the amplified positive thoughts to improve the world by way of the behavioral engineering that a good idea can produce. But the vast majority of the world rejected the idea of a non-invasive mind capturing technique like that proposed by Grant Mason, unless of course if it was for their own lawful protection.

With a small but expert team, Grant had devised a way to slip through the vigilant defense mechanisms of the world by seeking unauthorized access to the brain signal of the target and testing it to see if the thoughts reached the person, if they were good thoughts.

The invention that Grant Mason had come up with would allow him to tell if the user was at peace or discontent, comfortable or anxious, relaxed or stressed and all the types of while still being unaware of being monitored, or so he hoped.

With the invention in hand, all Grant found himself having to do was a simple conversion of the technology, from the design that was intended for commercial usage to one that would be ideal for the private sector.

The device was labelled a “second opinion” system but it was a wireless communications device that linked the wearer’s thoughts and feelings with the thoughts and feelings of another. Grant took the original design and adapted it so that his device could be used unlicensed by anyone and this he did by removing the transmitting device, with few wires and cables, and instead linking it to the wearer’s brain. The users that he had tested it on had enjoyed the minute headset-like device, but when the thoughts of the device’s wearer were compared to those of the target, many found different thoughts interesting and some found them disturbing.

Within Grant’s team, there was a testing of the compatibility of the second opinion system to the target and all of them had different results and thoughts on various targets. Some of the test subjects experienced anguish or guilt, others experienced peace and serenity, and some felt an overwhelming sense of joy and happiness when the device linked to the target told them that it was a good time for them to leave work.

The targets ranged from a lady named Angela Hill who had been bored at work which contributed to having low self esteem and depression, to a psychiatrist named Eric Fleming, who was constantly worried that he didn’t live up to the high standards he set for himself, to a waitress named Renee, who had been hired to be the waitresses by a restaurant chain located in a small market town named Kirklington. The restaurant chain was having financial problems and so the number of customers was down, now that there were competitors in the economy and was not growing as fast as it had been, but the reports and statistics that Grant Mason’s team had on the restaurant told that it was not as low as it actually was.

Renee, a slim young woman with long blonde hair and blue eyes, had only been a waitress at the restaurant for a short while. Her shifts were long but she had been given a promotion to being a hostess part time at a different restaurant in the same market town. The idea of leaving the restaurant she had first been hired for had not been feasible for her because she had worked for the same chain for about four years and the thought of leaving was difficult for her.

Training had been good and she had passed the tests of the team to become part of the second opinion testing. In her work environment, she was often bored as she felt as though there wasn’t much to do other than waiting and serving. The second opinion or brain source energy system that she was issued told her that she was bored, and that it was a better way for it to be used, but she was free to disregard its advice and she did.

With almost all of the participants in the second opinion system experiment having gone through the process thoroughly, most were happy with the results. The results of the testing had been collected and it was determined that the device was indeed ready for commercial use, even if it was not as sweeping as it could be to the world as a whole. The second opinion system was used with such permission and turned entirely off at night, when all did their most private thinking or activities.

Grant had found his way to improving the mind source energy theory and technology that had been used by people over centuries, but on a scale that nobody had seen before in the media driven world of the 1990’s. The augmented form of the second opinion system had been more popularly known as the source energy amplifier, even by the people who had it implanted, since the name brain source energy had been too vague and that people who had it implanted were only using it to amplify their personal source energy.

Grant’s experiment with his invention eventually worked in his favor, because even though it wasn’t used on a large or grand scale, it was used by people who were inspired to do good things, who were helped to feel happy and comforted, and who benefitted from being able to tell if it was something to be happy about or if it was something of worry. It was just that using it to make a person feel good about a bad situation was against the law since it was seen as a form of brainwashing, which no government or the individuals who followed such governments wanted.
