The Reflection In The Fire

in #fiction2 years ago

You are a man out at nighttime, strolling around in this other reality. The other world is slightly tilted and twisted. You can see the other world and the other people as twisting reflections in the moon. The people in this other world don't see your reflections, or themselves as twisted.

You draw a path through some trees, for fun to see how long you can make the path. You reach a river, and you turn to leave the river bank, only to discover that you somehow turned into the reflection in the water. The other world is leaning over the river. The water in the river is the reflection of you, distorted and strange. You can see your reflection in the river. You watch it approach you, then, then it stops. It doesn't seem to want to get any closer. It begins to retreat. Just at that moment the moon goes behind a cloud, the reflection vanishes.

You are now standing in front of a bridge. A little ways down stream from the bridge what appears to be a flash flood has occurred. This is strange since there was no rain here and the river is shallow here normally. In the distance, you see a faint light, and as you walk towards it, it grows brighter, then you realise that it is the same light shown in the reflection of the river. You walk toward it and you find a tiny river boat. You step onto it. You look back at the lights of the other reality, you are the reflection there, and when you look back, you are the reflection on the water.

As you walk further down the path, the reflection of yourself in the river becomes more clear. You look back at your reflection in the water, it looks different now. The reflection is changing its form. The reflection is becoming an animal. The reflection of an animal you have seen before. Yes, this is the reflection of the animal you were always wanted: a horse. As you go further down the path, the light becomes more and more important. You realise it is a fire.

You arrive at the fire. The fire is visible, but it is not real. It moves with the reflection of the river bank. You walk up to the fire, and it changes in the mirror. It becomes a person. As you move closer, you can see the fire transform. The reflected person speaks and becomes a young boy. The boy is you, except ten years old, and he has a name: you have a name and he knows you. He has a name – you do. He has a name and he will never forget it.

He is smiling, but there is something strange about the reflection in the fire.

You are now standing on the river bank, and the reflection of the river is gone. You are the one and only reflection left. There are no other reflections in the fire. All of a sudden, the fire is not real. It is as if a reflection in a mirror left them, but this is not the case. All of the fire is you, you are the reflection in the fire, the whole room is you. Important decisions can be made based on the reflection in the fire. The fire shifts in size and the image is the reflection of you, the boy and the road leading into the town. The mountains in the distance are reflected in the fire, and you turn to look back at the river. The reflection in the river is gone.

You are now walking in the town. You have a name now. You have a purpose and location. There are two stories, one of you and one of the other him. There is a bridge.

The bridge is there. He is still there. The bridge is gone. You are both. You can talk to him. Your reflection in the river and you share the same bed. You are going to meet his reflection in the fire the next day. You have a name now. You have your own memory. You have your own time. The river reflects you and him. He is your mate. He is your family. He has a house and he is your family. He is your friend.

You turn to look back at the fire. You are him. You are the fire.
