#13: Henry Drake -Executive Decision

..............................................................................................................................................

Henry made an executive decision, not having coffee and cigars was just too much of a hardship. He was also getting a mite low on food. He'd always kept the truck stocked for just this type of eventuality, but he’d been sitting for a long time and he was running out of stores. It was time to take the bull by the horns. First things first.

The truck that had jack-knifed in front of him was a dry van. Henry used a wench bar to break the lock on the trailer doors. Apparently the truck was on the way to deliver to a big box store of some sort. It was full of treasure, tons of treasure, the best kind. Henry spent the next few days digging and sorting through it.

He had even less reason to go anywhere now. The dry van was a gold mine. It was full of all types of food and other stuff. He even found coffee and cigars. Henry was set for months.

Except that the water appeared to be rising. It was normally forty feet or more to the swamp from this part of the bridge. It sure didn’t look that far to him now.

..................

One day Henry was leaning over the guardrail fishing. Beside him were two ice chests. One had his catch. The other had beer. He even had ice. He’d been stealing fuel from various trucks to keep a reefer full of meat running. He’d had about all the steak he could handle for a while so perhaps fish would be a welcome change.

Henry was reasonably content. For some values of ‘content.” He was all alone, true, but Over the Road Truckers were always alone. Some called his profession “Solitary confinement with a view,” Henry had been trucking for a LONG time, so he was used to being alone. In fact he preferred it.

He had been keeping an eye on the water level. It was definitely rising. That was worrisome.

He’d seen no one else in the time he’d been stranded. He’d opened the doors and explored the contents of several trucks nearby. He was a trucker so he wasn’t surprised at what he’d found. He’d found just about anything he wanted.

He had even found ammo. There might be other guns somewhere in the freight but he hadn’t seen them yet. Oddly enough he already had a gun. Now he had a few thousand rounds for it.

He’d also found boats. The truck with the ammo had been going to a sporting goods store. It had inflatable boats, kayaks, Jon boats, fishing gear, archery supplies and all types of sharp pointy things.

He could leave anytime he wanted to he supposed. He just wasn’t sure that he wanted to. Why should he? He was set pretty well on the bridge. He had food, water, beer, cigars and all kinds of toys with which to catch food to supplement his diet. If he got tired of eating steak from the reefer he might try to fish from the river. Cajuns lived in the swamp. No reason he couldn’t do the same.

What more could he want?

He’d have to think about this. He’d give it a week or so...more.

it's hard to tell what’s true or when they are lying isn’t it? It seems that they are more interested in influencing public opinion than they are reporting the facts.

Sort:

hello my friend everrit .hey just a question Are your stories based on real events, ?or have certain similar things happened to you?

certainly.
It's all true.
only the names have been changed to protect the guilty.

That seemed to me, it's a good story, and who is Henry? hahaha I'm just kidding, greetings, keep it that way brother

Why are you tagging it as fiction? People should know it isnt. Once again, bravo!

----->Slaps head, laughs at comments <--------
Ya know Henry is in a pretty good position. Food, Ice, water, and fresh air. Ability to leave when he feels like it, or when it becomes necessary to leave. Nice thing is no one is telling him, do this do that wrong way do it my way, get out of the way...and all the other crap that passes off for "civilized society".

yeah..I kinda laugh at some of the comments too.
the totally braindead ones I mute.
I consider it to be insulting for them to leave stupid comments on something they obviously did not read.

I had a bot "steal" one of my comments, I actually wasted a down vote on it it pissed me off so much at the time, trigger reaction on my part. If I was smart I would have just muted it instead of downvoting it, but it pissed me off steem2000 bot, if you don't have it muted yet you might want to.

destroy ALL bots.
I mute them when I identify them.

I try too, just missed that one, and wasted some vote power, I think that ticked me off the most, the waste, I have so little vote power as it is, I hate wasting it.

you NEED to buy some delegation when it becomes available.

Wow i like you story

This is a famous fiction. We can gather a lot of knowledge from this fiction. It is an educative value.

Nice post dear

Yes, definitely Drake is thinking and acting as an efficient manager, He's quantifying and evaluating all that is available and measuring its scope, the time it can take the rise of water level and is defining a prudential time to evaluate the behavior of all these variables and to be able to make a decision. He has an advantage, his profession, "Solitary confinement with a view," which will give him the patience to wait and be able to make a well-supported decision...Even in the worst situations people should have the peace of mind and the ability to organize, evaluate and make the best decisions. Good episode.
