The Experiment - Quantum Stories by Krisz Rokk

She was floating through the air and touching the fluffy clouds when she realized there was something very familiar to this situation. She’s been here before. Her brain didn’t recall it but the feeling couldn’t be wiped out. It was engrained in every cell of her body.

Machines rumbling, a couple of lab people in white coats furiously typing on their keyboards and a telephone that kept ringing. Nobody bothered to pick it up though, so it continued to add noise to the seemingly chaotic environment.

Maggie couldn’t hear anything. She was in a different realm, far from the experiment that was unfolding in that heavily lighted room. Although her brain and body were wired to a large tube-like machine, she felt nothing.

She could see a plane in the far distance flying by without the pilots noticing her presence. From this altitude the Earth looked magnificent. On one side she could see the ocean with its blue and dark green waves inviting cruisers to embark on new adventures while on the other side a small coastal city was proudly presenting its historical white houses with sparkles of light glowing around them.

All of a sudden she was sucked into a vortex and the peacefulness vanished. The sky changed its color to dark red and when she looked down to the previously colorful mosaic, she was shocked to see hills of mud everywhere. A group of people that looked like ants from above were forcing themselves through mud carrying their belongings. Horses trying to carve their path through the difficult passages were all these people could rely on. Maggie turned around and looked down again. Deep holes was all she could see. As if several mountains have turned upside down to form a pattern of stalactites. The whole scenery was weird, rendering an overarching sense of fear and despair.

Luckily it didn’t last long when Maggie found herself in another vortex leaving this agonizing dimension and entering into another one. This time the sky turned back into its familiar blue colors which had a comforting aspect to it. But then she looked down as usual and all she could see is a pink sea full of white stones ranging in size. The place looked deserted. “What species could live under such conditions anyway?”, Maggie wondered.

As soon as she had that thought she was back into the vortex. After a few spins, another realm opened up in front of her eyes, just like it happened on the previous occasions. Only this time, everything was upside down. She was now stuck on what appeared to be the Earth, looking down on a purple sky. While everything around her was solid, she couldn’t get her head around the fact that she would need to walk with her head looking down to a purple jelly that was constantly changing while giving strange sounds.

Maggie’s vitals were all over the place. The monitors were beeping, yet the error was nowhere to be found. A team of eight people surrounded the two men in white coats with one of them instructing everybody in the lab what steps to take next. Nothing seemed to be under control no matter how thought-out his commands sounded.

What seemed like a few minutes to Maggie were actually three days in total. The experiment had to end now, otherwise it would damage Maggie’s body to the point where she would lose vital organs. Even providing the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals through IV wasn’t working anymore.

“We can’t bring her back. This has never happened before. The code has not been modified and yet, the algorithm displays a different program. Her vitals are through the roof and if we unplug her now, we lose her for good.”

Maggie was back in the vortex anxiously waiting to enter the next dimension when a door opened up revealing a colorful forest on the other side. Blue butterflies as big as both her hands flying on top of tree crowns, yellow flowers bringing the fallen leaves to life, birds accompanying her as she entered this paradise-like scenery. No other realm fascinated Maggie more than this one right here. She felt magnetized by the surrounding beauty and her heart was at ease.

An empty lab. Monitors turned off. Wires hanging down from a tube-like machine that once hosted experiments.
