For the road!

The good ‘ol famous one for the road usually boils down to a never-ending conquest of conversation. If you haven’t been to any drinking session (inuman) in which one of your acquaintances or friends initiated a for the road thought — you’re already missing a major part of the session.

The term, one for the road in Google is coined as “a final drink taken just before leaving on a journey” per phrases.org.uk. If you’re a movie buff, perhaps it isn’t new at all as there are quite some films that explicitly used that phrase. On the other hand though, if you’re a drinker or manginginom — it’s matik (automatic). In the Filipino context, there are too many to mention on how it’s derived. Those will be discussed as you go through on this commentary.

  1. Last bottle pa or Isang bote pa
As closing time comes, this is usually a punch line from one of your folks as going home isn’t necessary yet. After a bucket or two, the “last one” or “isa pa” comes into play whereas in the end it’d turned out as another bucket or two still. It’s imperative for a group to ask for another round but this time, it’s piece by piece or “tingi tingi”. This catch phrase is usually used when a deeper conversation was thrown out in the field already. All ears are now in the table.

  2. Minsan lang ‘to
One of the famous lines I’ve heard personally from people who doesn’t want you to leave just yet. Bidding farewell would be hard as one from the group will usually pursuade yourself from leaving. This is where you’d send an sms to your partner that you can’t just leave the session yet. Above anything else, this would be a session that was set for only an hour or two in which would turn out to be 4 to 5 hours long — sometimes longer!

  3. May tampuluts (pulutan) pa e!
Who doesn’t want a Crispy Pata in the table if there’s a bucket of below zero beer? The sizzling crunchy pork sisig would definitely keep yourself from leaving the table just yet. Even if it runs out, letting the waiter/waitress know would not hinder yourselves from starving as the session must go on. Well, if you’re a “kung-fu-mulutan malupet”, this might be your kryptonite.

  4. Mga rebelasyon!
A break-up from a relationship? Oh, there are revelations! Stories that were not published to the press in which you’d somehow hold a presscon in front of your folks. Office issues? Blind items inside the building will be uncovered in the session. Gossips? The cancer of the society as sessions would turn out to be talking about people, people, and people. Narcissistic ego? This is where you’d create stories to continuously feed yourself. Well, yeah, revelations as they would say... this would really hold yourself from leaving and the for the road concept would definitely come into play.

  5. Hindi pa ‘ko lasing
The oldie but goodie famous line of Filipinos when it comes to drinking. In every group, there’s always this someone who will never ever retreat even if that person can barely stand up and go to the restroom. When almost everyone’s decided to call it a day, there’s always someone who will literally say, hindi pa ‘ko lasing. In most groups, the hindi pa ‘ko lasing concept usually boils down to the sense of machismo or pride of that individual. The show must goes on, more drinks, and usually it ends up yourself hugging the toilet bowl (like myself!)

I definitely missed some — nevertheless, those concepts are just mere ideas that came upon of (I think) what’s coming at yourself whenever you’ll be engaged in a drinking session. As time goes by, bars and inuman spots are now all around the metro. Drinking or inuman has always been a part of the Filipino culture as in the past, it’s one way of celebration. I wonder though if Katipuneros also took part in the creation of those concepts mentioned above.
