Capsule Film Review: 200 Cigarettes (1999)

in #film5 years ago (edited)

1999 comedy 200 Cigarettes, one of the first Hollywood attempts to exploit 1980s nostalgia among older cohorts of Generation X, takes the formula of George Lucas’ classic nostalgia piece American Graffiti. The plot, set at 1981 New Year’s Eve, follows diverse group of, mostly young, characters trying to get to the big party. 200 Cigarettes features strong ensemble cast, but it is ruined by direction by inexperienced Ruth Bramon Garcia, as well as script by Shana Larsen that fails to add anything particularly funny. The only thing that makes this film is watchable could be found in scenes featuring good acting by Courtney Love, Christina Ricci and Kate Hudson.
