Capsule Film Review: 28 Days (2000)

in #film5 years ago

In 2000 Sandra Bullock, while enjoying the zenith of popularity as one of Hollywood’s queens of romantic comedies, tried something different with 28 Days. Although in some ways it still functions as romantic comedy, this film directed by Betty Thomas is actually closer to drama because it deals with rather dark and often depressive subject of addiction. Bullock plays Gwen Cummings, successful New York columnist whose seemingly perfect life comes crashing down due to the destructive accident cause by her excessive drinking. When given the choice between 28 days in jail or 28 days in rehab centre, Gwen opts for the latter and gradually meets and befriends group of various addicts, including handsome baseball player (played by Viggo Mortensen). 28 Days is torn between being a comedy and serious drama, and that makes it fail at both tasks. Only the good and diverse cast, including Steve Buscemi in memorable role of rehab counsellor, makes this film watchable.
