Becoming a Professional Movie Director

Hey everybody,

my name is edy boman and in this video i talk about how you are becoming a movie director.

First of all I can tell from my own perspective that it really takes time, passion, education and a lot of collaboration with other filmmakers to become a professional movie director.

So here is the best way how to reach your goal:

Step 1

Educate yourself on the topics screenwriting, directing actors and visually telling stories. Here are my 2 books I would recommend:

First: The Soul of Screenwriting by Keith Cunningham

Second: Directing Actors by Judith Weston

For the visual part you have to educate yourself by watching movies. Pick the genre you like the most and analyse what you see. Watch youtube videos on film analysis.

Step 2

Write a screenplay and shot your first short-movie with friends. Maybe actors are already involved. Submit your movie to international film-festivals.

Step 3

Go to college and do a major in film.

Here you can collaborate with other students on projects you like. You can deepen your knowledge on screenwriting, working with actors, creating a visual concept for the movie and very important, you learn to speak about the creative process with other students.

Step 4

Do internships and assistant jobs on the filmset. Here you learn from the professionals.

Step 5

Save money to shot your first low budget feature movie and submit the movie to film festivals and expect a invitation. On these festivals you should win prices, so your movie gets more attention. Try to get in touch with film producers and pitch them a story for your next movie.

And voila 2-4 years later you shot your first movie were you get paid.

Okay Okay, it really sounds easy, but the film market is flooded with movie-directors who are financially struggeling, because they just don‘t get paid deals. You should only consider this career, when you have the feeling, that there is nothing on earth, that will make you happy, other than directing movies. So be aware.
