Last year as part of their animated movie extended universe DC released The Death of Superman, which had an end credits scene which opened up a number of new questions, and now it’s time for some answers.

First a quick rundown of events in .The Death of Superman*, containers spoilers…obviously.

The Death of Superman
Lois Lane and Clark Kent are in a relationship, but although Lois has met his parents Clark is still very cagey about his past and secret identity. Something which Lois can’t deal with any longer.

Meanwhile a boom tube opens up spitting out an asteroid headed for Earth, smashing through a space mission orbiting the planet, before landing in the sea. While a teams of humans and Atlantains check it out, the asteroid breaks apart and a creature emerges.

But this Alien does not come in peace. It makes short work of it’s onlookers before making it way on to dry land, where it proceeds to kill everything it comes in contact with on it’s way to Metropolis. The members of the Justice League try to intervene but barely make it out alive.

While lots of people are dying and insurance premiums are going through the roof Clark and Lois meet for coffee. It’ here that Clark finally reveals his true identity, but before Lois has time to process the information Clark gets wind of the impending doom approaching the city.

Superman and the creature named Doomsday duke it out for some time, eventually Superman hits him with such speed it breaks the creatures neck, but not before Supes is impaled on Doomsday’s bone blade. Superman then dies in Lois’s arms.

…and that’s pretty much covers everything you need to know, but if that’s not enough you could always check out Loosetooth’s review, if not let’s move swiftly on….again there will be a few spoilers…

Reign of the Supermen
The post-credits scene of The Death of Superman revealed the arrival of four super-styled individuals; a teenage clone of Superman who works for Lex Luthor, an emotionless visor-wearing Superman who doesn’t take prisoners, a metal suited hero with superman symbol adorning his chest, and a cybernetic Superman more machine than man.

As the film progresses the four Supermen gain their own monikers; Superboy, The Eradicator, Steel and Cyborg-Superman, and that is how we shall now refer to them. Each with their own style of justice, begging the question ‘Which one is the real Superman?’ if indeed any of them.

Later when the President is unveiling the Justice League’s new base of operations, The Watchtower, the proceedings are thrown into disarray when a boom tube opens up spewing forth countless parademons sent by Darkseid (who was defeated in the first instalment of the extended universe movies, Justice League: War). It appears Darkseid is behind one of the Supermen, but which one?...actually by this point of the movie you know exactly who, and why, but we don’t want to spoil too much now do we?

As a rule the DC animated movies are pretty solid, and certainly more consistent than their live action efforts, and Reign of the Supermen is no exception, in fact it’s one of the best movies they’ve produced in the last few years, and the best extended universe movie since Justice League: War.

One complaint though is the film relies a little too much on you having seen the previous instalment, or at least remember what happened in it. Part of the big reveal is wasted because you have remember something from the The Death of Superman which while being a great scene seems inconsequential at the time. It would have been helpful to the audience to recap more of the previous films events.
It’s definitely advisable to watch/rewatch The Death of Superman before you sit down to this one.

Have you seen Reign of the Supermen yet? How does it rate against other animated DC movies? Let me know in the comments below.
