In 1947, American author Robert Penn Warren wrote a riveting, damning novel of political corruption.
The novel focuses on fictional governor Willie Stark and was loosely based on the real life of Louisiana governor Huey Long. Long, a polarizing figure, was assassinated in 1935.
Warren's novel won the Pulitzer Prize and was adapted for film in 1949 and again in 2006.
It's always difficult to adapt a novel to film; the layers and nuances of novels don't always translate. As in the case of "All the King's Men", filmmakers had to forego much of the book's philosophy and secondary story. But the result is worth it.
Both screen versions (1949 and 2006) are engaging films and ought to be more well known. If you're not a fan of black and white movies, then we recommend the 2006 version starring Sean Penn.
But if you're willing to give an older movie a try, you won't be disappointed by Broderick Crawford's performance.
