Removing berdan primers

in #firearms7 years ago

Hello, steemians, and welcome to my page, eh!

In this video, I wanted to show you one method of removing the fired primers from berdan primed cartridge cases. You can't use the same tools that you would use for depriming boxer primed cases. A boxer primed case has a single hole in the middle of the case under the primer. The resizing die on a reloading die set has a depriming pin that goes through that hole and pushes the fired primer out of the case. The berdan primer pocket has 2 or 3 smaller holes offset from the center of the case, making the use of a depriming pin difficult at best.

There are a couple of ways to remove the primers from a berdan primed case. One of those ways is called the hydraulic method. It's messy and it's not the ideal way to do it, but it is usually effective.

Thanks for stopping by my page to check out my video, eh!

You know, Drill bits have a taper, they are wider at the business end and narrower at the end that goes in the Chuck. This is done to prevent the Drill getting stuck in the hole it just drilled. You may want to stop by a local machine shop, they often have scrap round stock too short to be practical to keep around and it's possible they'll let you have a piece. Hope this helps and getting to know a local machinist never hurts if you are into Guns. Greetings!

Thanks for your comment!
The biggest problem with using regular rod stock would be finding a piece of rod of the right diameter. You would probably need to have a piece of rod turned to the proper diameter. That would be ok if you have a lot of cases to do on a regular basis, but just for doing a few cases, it seems like an unnecessary expense.
I could probably get the local gunsmith to turn a rod for me for this, but I'd have to wait a while, hes got a lot of work most of the time.

super cool, glad you made this happen after you talking about this idea, super cool!

I still need to post the video of shooting the old rifle that these cartridges came from... :-)
