VIDEO: Watch as the large fire spreads rapidly engulfing the surrounding area with smoke plumes near Mt Cook Aoraki.
Fire and Emergency were called to reports of a large blaze at Mount Cook Road towards the Dusky Trail on Sunday at around 11.25 am.
Four helicopters, two planes and multiple fire crews are battling the blaze to try and contain it before it spreads further.
Roadblocks are in place, cars are being turned around and are advised to stay away from the area.
