Pole fishing, simply put, is a type of fishing style that uses a long fishing pole. This, however, is not to be confused with other types of fishing styles, like fly fishing, which also technically use poles. Within this style of fishing there is some variation. The type of pole you use also varies depending on the type of fish you decide to catch and your ability to handle the pole itself based on your size.

What are the classifications?

Pole fishing, as discussed above, is fishing that uses fishing poles. However, it is important to note that when people talk about “pole fishing” it is more specifically defined. Pole fishing is its own thing and refers to a type of fishing style that uses a long pole, not a rod and reel or a fly rod. Pole fishing is its own thing.

What kind of fish can you catch?

One of the most common types of fish to catch with this kind of pole is carp. When you see carp fishing tournaments this is often the fishing style that they use. In fact, there are special fishing poles for each kind of fish that you catch. Other types of fish include trout and other freshwater fishes. This is also a fairly popular style to use on deep see fishing and again, you do need a special pole for that.

How do you choose a pole?

If you are passionate about pole fishing, chances are you will have a variety of poles for different situations and different fishes. If you are new to this style of fishing, it is best to find a pole that will fit a variety of situations or to choose a pole for the type of fishing that is most common in your local area.

What about bait?

Each pole fisherman has his own preferences when it comes to bait. Not only that, but there are certain baits that are used for different fish. Your best bet is to gather advice from those who have more experience and to also ask at your local angling shop. Your goal is to find the bait that works the best for your situation.

Are you new to pole fishing? If so, you might benefit from getting instruction. Ask someone you know to show you how to do it or pick their brains at the local angling shop. You can also take lessons.
