Make FLOSS great again (giving without having to spend money). Part 1: Replicant

in #floss7 years ago

Hello Steemit,

Today I would like to perform a small experiment as I'm eager to see how much the Steemit community can do to help advance developments in the FLOSS area. Wouldn't it be nice to give some money to free software without actually having to spend anything? Quite the contrary: You will actually get paid for upvoting this article but you probably know this already if you are a Steemit user.

So, here is the experimental setup: All rewards received for this post will be converted to Bitcoins and sent to the Bitcoin wallet of a chosen FLOSS project 7 days after the post of this article (i.e. as soon as I'm able to redeem the rewards for this article). What's in it for me? Well, actually nothing as all the rewards go to the chosen project. What's your job? Simply upvote this article and spread the word.

I would like to start with the Replicant project as I deem it to be very important. Its mission and objectives are summarized quite well on their website. I quote:

Replicant is a fully free Android distribution running on several devices, a free software mobile operating system putting the emphasis on freedom and privacy/security. It is based on CyanogenMod and replaces or avoids every proprietary component of the system, such as user-space programs and libraries as well as firmwares.
Replicant aims to be an ethical system: it does not ship nor recommend the use of non-free software.

Many different devices are supported by Replicant, to an extent specific to each device. Basic features such as graphics, sound and telephony (if applicable) are supposed > to be working for each device (if not, developers are confident they will work soon).

Replicant is a community-led effort, currently driven by a single developer. Not every piece of software in Replicant should be expected to be fully-featured nor entirely reliable, even though developers are trying their best.

Let's see how much money we can raise together. If you like the idea, please help giving some love to the FLOSS community. You can also help by proposing your favourite FLOSS project (with a Bitcoin donation address). Just drop a comment and the comment with the most upvotes will be chosen as next donation candidate once the first payout has been made. All proposed projects must fulfill the following simple requirements:

1.) They must be FLOSS
2.) They must have a Bitcoin donation address

Thank you so much for your support. I hope we can collect a significant amount of money for the project above. If you would rather want to donate directly, you can do so here.

Small disclaimer: The actual donated amount will depend on the Steem/BTC price 7 days from now. Furthermore, some exchange fees might be deducted as I'll be using the Poloniex exchange by following this small tutorial.

Great post. I would suggest Debian. It is a great OS Desktop and Server wise.

Good choice. Thanks a lot for your comment. However, I highly doubt that I will actually do another campaign. Just look at the payout so far...

thanks for sharing

Thank you for participating.

Thanks a lot for pointing that out. ;-) You just helped making Replicant great again by upvoting this post.

I would like to suggest a project for part 2 of this campaign: Octave.
