Madness of cherry blossoms in Ukraine

in #flowers6 years ago

Every spring, when we hear about blooming cherries, associations with Japan come to mind. However, it turns out that you do not have to go to Asia to experience this beautiful botanical phenomenon. Nevertheless spectacular sakura blossom in the Ukrainian Uzhgorod.

Every year at the end of April, located at the Ukrainian-Slovak border of Uzhgorod, it attracts thousands of tourists wanting to see a spring flower explosion. All this is due to the flowering of thousands of ornamental cherry trees called the Japanese sakura. The first trees, imported from Vienna, were planted in the city in the 1930s, when Uzhgorod was part of Czechoslovakia. Since then, cherry trees have spread all over the city, but the largest accumulation of them occurs on the banks of the Už River. When the Kiev and Orthodox boulevards were filled in 2009 and 2011, the city gained the longest "Avenue of Sakur" in Europe.

Decorative cherries usually bloom at the turn of April and May, but it may be earlier or later depending on the weather. At the same time, magnolias and apple trees bloom with sakura. The city organizes then "Sakura-Fest", which is accompanied by many cultural, sports and culinary events - such as the fair of pink wines.

The interest this year is so great that tickets for trains to Uzhgorod were bought in advance and the city had to ask the railways for additional connections.
