Here are a few dishes I realy enjoyed these days. Luckily, I managed to snap some photos before everything disappeared at the speed of light (yes, even the crumbs!). From my mom’s legendary stuffed chicken, to a chicken wings our dad made on talandara, honey sweet roll, fried cheese, eggs and a perfect wood-fired pizza, each of these meals deserves its little spotlight. So let’s dive in before I get hungry all over again!
This is my mom’s specialty and no one makes it better! Tender chicken breasts are stuffed with kachkaval cheese and bacon, seasoned with salt and pepper, then baked in the oven until perfectly golden. The melted cheese turns into a rich, flavorful sauce that’s absolutely amazing! She also adds halved potatoes, which soak up all that perfect sauce. It’s pure comfort food, and the leftovers taste even better the next day! If there are any. 😍
Roll cake, inspired by the classic Russian Medovik cake, but made in a much quicker way. Instead of baking many thin layers, you make just one a little softer honey base, spread it with cream and just roll it up. The result is light, creamy and wonderfully sweet. It’s so easy to prepare and disappears too fast once served. A perfect dessert for tea time or any special occasion. Or just for every day, noone will be angry, for sure! :D
This one was absolutely delicious! Fried chicken wings from the talandara // I actually wrote about the preparation in my previous post in the Photography Lovers community//. The wings came out crispy, golden and perfectly seasoned, but only with salt. My sister served them with homemade fries, slightly crispy on the outside and perfectly soft inside. It’s one of those meals you just enjoy with your hands, no fancy cutlery needed, I haven't even used my fork. 🤗 Comfort food at its finest!
Mix of ready-made and homemade touches on one plate. The star of the meal is ofc breaded cheese triangles or "pohovani kačkavalj" from Svetofor, a low-price market we have here in Serbia that often hides real gems in the frozen section. They’re not too healthy, of course, but oh, they’re soooooo good!
That day for breakfast, we paired them with a few slices of Alpska salama... a classic from our “builder-style” sandwiches (I’m not a bricklayer, but I sometimes enjoy the taste, hihi xD). To balance the flavors, I added fresh tomato and green pepper slices plus a spoon of homemade tartar sauce my sister makes with sour cream, garlic, salt, pepper and a bit of parsley. If you haven’t tried making this sauce at home, you really should. It’s quick, cheap and so much better than store-bought, which I think has cucumbers, mayo or smth else, not so sure. I mean that one is also delicious, but homemade is a homemade!
"Jaja na oko" or sunny-side-up eggs with a few slices of store-bought bacon. It’s not the smoky, dry kind, more like juicy, watery one, but it still adds some flavor and texture. I added a spoon of sour cream on top and shaped it into a heart. Yes, purely for the aesthetics! Even though it was a simple breakfast, that little touch made it feel special. Sometimes all you need is a small detail to turn a regular morning into a cozy one. A small heart of sour cream, exactly!
This is the slice of wood-fired pizza my brother in law and I had on our trip to Belgrade. Crispy crust, tangy tomato sauce, and melted cheese... but the star of the show is of course the smoky bacon on top. It’s that unmistakable Serbian touch that makes every bite extra special. Simple, rustic and absolutely delicious, just the way we like it.
Phew... at this hour when I wake up, seeing each of those delicious dishes is tempting...
