This week's cake creation: A family of owls for my friends 50th birthday cake

I used the method from my previous post "You’ll Have A HOOT Making These!" but updated with better photos and instructions. I hope you like them, they make fab cake or cupcake toppers :-)

To make an owl family you will need:

· Modelling paste

· Food colouring
· Edible glue
· A large and small petal cutter

· Two small circle cutters or piping nozzles

· Letter cutters (optional, for the initials)

How to do it:

· Cut out the initials, if using, paint and leave aside to dry

· Colour your modelling paste as desired, I used Chestnut for the bodies and Liquorice for the eyes

· Cut out the bodies with the large petal cutter

· You can use lustre at this point to make the bodies shimmery if you wish - I used copper

· Take the small petal cutter and cut out the top of the ‘body’ to make the ‘ears’
20170822_194613-1.jpg
· Cut out another large petal in your chosen wings colour
· Use the small petal cutter again to cut out wings
20170822_200651.jpg
· Cut out white circles for eyes using the larger piping nozzle
20170822_192257.jpg
· Cut out pupils in black using the smaller nozzle
20170822_192949.jpg
· Assemble the owls, using a small amount of glue to hold them together
20170822_202054-1.jpg
20170822_202640-1.jpg
· Use the very tip of the small petal cutter to make a beak
20170822_202733-1.jpg
· Finish off with the feet – cut two small ovals with the piping nozzle. Attach to the body and press into the feet with a cocktail stick or knife to make the ‘toes’

· Leave to dry for an hour or so before using on your bake

Wow, these look really cute :)

The thing I'd love to see is a big owl cake, covered with tiny owls like these. That would be a hoot.

They are just so adorable!
