Food poisoning is caused when we eat contaminated food. The contamination can be caused by bacteria, fungi, parasite like house fly,toxins, viruses. Contamination can occur at an time especially when food substance is been handled in an unsterile environment.
CAUSES
There are numerous host of microorganisms causing food poisoning.The most common ones are;
- Entamoeba:causes dysentery
-Giardia: it causes diarrhoea
-Listeria: this cause miscarriage, premature delivery or still birth in pregnant woman
-Shigella: it causes bloody diarrhoea
-Salmonella: it's a typhoid causing bacteria
-E coli: causes diarrhoea
-Campylobacter
-Norovirus
All of this are contacted in the food substance
SYMPTOMS
The following are symptoms of food poisoning:diarrhoea, fever, dysentry, abdominal pain, body ache, vomiting.
In most cases of food poisoning people do get well within 4-7days but can be worse in those who are young old or with low immune system(leucopenia)
CURE/TREATMENT
it’s very important for a person suffering from food poisoning to be hydrated to avoid excess water loss in the body. Take drinks with high carbohydrates content and that can help in fatigue eg sport drink, fruit juice, coconut drink etc.
In children, Oral Rehydration Solution is very important in the treatment of food poisoning and can be bought in any drug store or primary health centre

PREVENTION
Do not undercook or overcook your food
Always avoid exposure of food to open air in an unclean environment
Endeavour to always cook meat and egg very well before eating
Fresh vegetable should be kept in the fridge
Always drink pasteurised milk and juice
Store your food in a cool clean place
Endeavour to wash your hand before and after cooking
Always sanitize anything that will come in contact with raw
