Monstera Deliciosa (delicious fruit)

in #food7 years ago

This plant grows all over the world usually tropical areas I believe, the reason I wanted to make this post is because I'd see it everywhere growing up (Auckland, New Zealand) and thought it was just ornamental having no idea about it's delicious fruit. Tastes like a cross between banana and pineapple amazing it sort of looks like it too.P8250079.JPG

Once the fruit is ripe it will be quite large and should easily snap from the plant. In order to eat it you must leave it upside down in a cup or jar (on a sunny window sill is best tho not necessary) after about a week it will begin to peel itself the little green hexagons fall off revealing the yummy fruit segments which can be plucked out quite easily. Be careful not to eat too much as i believe it contains some toxins, make sure you only eat the pieces which have shed it's skin naturally (don't try to force peel the skin as the fruit under is not ready and will taste bad)

An amazing feature of this plant is that it's seedlings will travel along the forest floor towards the darkest area it can find. Why?. Because it knows there must be something large and tall which it plans to climb up with it's large aerial roots (usually a big tree)
