Making apple sauce

in #food10 years ago (edited)

I purchased this apple peeler a few years ago. Not sure if it’s still available but it has saved me many hours in the kitchen. It’s made out of plastic and looks cheap but beleive me its not, it’s a work horse!. It has suction cups on the base that keeps it in place which is one of the features that sold me on it.
I’m not being paid to endorse this product I just love it and wanted to share it with you.

I make apple sauce every year and wait for it………..freeze it. Bet you didn’t see that coming 😉
In the beginning I would peel them by hand hence the hours spent in the kitchen but with this thing I can peel a half a bushel of apples in about 30 to 45 minutes.
Here is what you’ll need for the peeling process:
Peeler, cutting board, garbage bowl, corer/slicer, large pot, potato peeler (not shown) and towel for possible liquids from apples (optional)

I set it up in an assembly line. The first thing I do is use a potato peeler to remove the skin from the top and bottom of the apple before placing it on the peeler. This makes for a cleaner peel later.

Then I place the apple on the four prongs to secure it to the peeler and turn the handle, thats it your done peeling.

The corer/slicer that I use has two settings the standard large slice or you can twist the base to make smaller slices which I prefer for making apple sauce.

I remove the core into the garbage bowl, Then remove the sliced apples into the pot and repeat this process until all your apples are peeled, sliced & cored. They will look like this.

I cook until they start to break down and become soft, this time will vary depending on the amount of apples you have in your pot. I usually stir every few minutes. Smaller batches are done in about ten minutes but I have half a bushel in this pot so it takes a little longer to break down. I removed it from the burner and used my emersion blender to smooth out the texture. If you want a chunkier apple sauce then just use a wooden spoon to break apples down to your desired consistency.

After the sauce has cooled I place it in gallon size freezer bags so I can enjoy delicious home made apple sauce all year.
