Great indian food basket #1 pani-puri

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Indian food cuisine is as mouth-watering as any other cuisine in the world. So, for all you wonderful people out there, from different places across the globe, I would wanna introduce you to this simple yet yummy food, you get on the streets of India. Which happens to be my personal favourite snack, as its cheap yet so savouring!

So, as a school kid, I would buy and have this snack with my pocket money :-P

Lets explore pani-puri !!!

How is it made ?!

  • It is made of small crispy puri (hollow, closed and looks like an egg shell, only a bit more circular in appearance ;-)), deep fried in cooking oil and made out of wheat flour.

  • A small hole is made in this puri with a hard and swift poke, with a left hand thumb nail, while holding it in the palm of the same hand or as shown in the picture below :

  • It is then stuffed with a little amount of a spicy, sour and tangy filling. The filling is made of a mixture of boiled gram, freshly torn corriander leaves and mashed potatoes with spices, making it tangy rather than sweetish.

  • Now, for the final touch, the puri with the filling is dipped into a matka (earthern pot) of sour-spicy water. And it's ready to serve.

How do you have it?
On Indian streets, if you happen to spot a compact table with a matka(earthen pot) on top of it wrapped in a red cloth and a big transparent bag of puris, it's time for a pani-puri treat to yourself guys. The snack is fondly called as matka pani-puri.

Go and grab your little plate and get served with some tangy-twist snack.

The man whom you could respectfully call bhaiya(meaning brother) would serve you with the freshly made pani-puris which you could easily hold between your thumb and middle, index fingers.

Do not think a second before putting it into your mouth, else you might spill the liquid out of your snack and miss out the fun. Relish the tangling taste and texture with crispiness of the puri and the watery filling.

Must try dish! Though some of you might find it a bit spicy, not to worry as the pani-puri wale bhaiya (the bro who serves you pani-puri) will be most welcome to customize your snack and make it sweeter with the sweet tamarind chutney (paste) dip.
