Welcome to another episode of my food review and this time we'll be talking about McDonald's Malaysia newest burgers, The Smoky Grilled Beef burger and The Hot n' Crispy Chicken Burger.
In the last episode, I talked about KFC's newest Burger - Cheezilla, which despite its cheesy taste and humongous size, failed to really run away from the taste of KFC's Zinger Burger.
In this episode, I'll start with the first burger I've tasted from McDonald's newest addition, The Hot N' Crispy Chicken Burger and will be doing the Smoky Beef Burger in the next episode.
Now, to be fair, the name was spot on as the burger was definitely spicy and crispy but that's pretty much it about this burger. Much like KFC's approach to new burger by capitalising on their previous best-seller, McDonald's did the same by following up their biggest success, the Spicy Chicken McDeluxe which is my all time favourite. You see, the Spicy Chicken McDeluxe is easily the best burger they have ever come up with and that's because the chicken is juicy, tender, spicy and the bun is different in that it's crispy on the surface but soft on the inside.
The taste was unlike what McDonald's had ever done or experimented with before and because of that, it was seen as both revolutionary and brilliant. However, McDonald's tried to exploit Malaysians' soft spot for spicy food again with the introduction of the Spicy Korean Burger but the hype was short-lived as the mixture made it too spicy and unappetising. safe to say, it wasn't meant to stay.
Like any stubborn kid who did not learn from their mistakes, McDonald's tried again with this recipe with Hot N' Crispy Chicken and although it didn't suck nearly as bad as its predecessor, it was not all that great. For starter, it was unappetisingly spicy - you see, spicy food is intended to make you crave for it more with each bite, you want to dive into another bite of excitement but this one is just pain and torture and not in any way keeps you coming back. You don't experience pleasure at all from the juice of the chicken. The chicken was juicy but it was not anymore juicy than the Spicy Chicken McDeluxe and that the poorly mixed spices sort of turned down the chicken's taste. At least the Spicy Korean burger is more memorable than this one thanks to the colour of its bun.
In short, there was nothing remarkable or memorable about the burger and if you asked me, McDonald's is better off with their current menu. My rating? An abysmal 4.85/10.
