The researchers' approach to developing the method was taken from a method used to control complex industrial processes in food science. Basically, the method involves using and analyzing large amounts of biological data in a holistic and exploratory way. Researchers analyzed all the components of blood samples rather than investigating what a biomark meant for the disease, as is often done in health and medical science.
According to the researchers, when a large amount of relevant measurements in many people are used to assess health risks (here, breast cancer), high-quality information is obtained. The more measurements the analysis involves, the better the model can handle complex problems.
This model shows nothing about the importance of a single biomark about breast cancer. But it reveals the importance of a biomarker sequence and their interactions.
Professors stated that no part of the model was neither necessary nor sufficient, that the entire model provided the prediction of cancer.
The metabolic blood profile defines the amount of all components in the blood. Scientists measured metabolic blood profiles for this project. If you are in a pre-cancer condition, this model apparently changes for certain metabolites processed.
While mammography can detect newly started breast cancer with 75 percent sensitivity, the new metabolic blood profile can predict a woman's chance of developing breast cancer in 2 to 5 years with 80 percent sensitivity.
