Bredie, stew or casserole

in #foodies4 years ago

What's in a name? People often ask. Well, as a few of us said yesterday in a cross-the-seas chat, it depends on your mother tongue and where you come from. A casserole is a fancy name for a stew. A bredie is the Afrikaans word for stew.

Last night's butternut bredie (casserole). Based on a traditional South African mutton stew slow cooked and spiced with ginger and cinnamon. I substituted the pumpkin with butternut. Served with wilted Swiss Chard freshly picked. And with rice for The Husband.

Revamped recipe coming to the blog soon. Along with a bit of etymology on the side.

Until next time, be well
