US dollar fell to its lowest level in more than three years Friday as expectations of accelerating growth abroad spurred investors to sell the US currency and pile into the euro. The euro was up 1.4% to $1.22, its highest level in a little over three years. Many analysts believe the dollar’s decline in 2018 is likely to be accelerated by the passage of the US tax bill, which is widely expected to expand the US fiscal deficit. The dollar tends to fall when the deficit expands, reflecting in part the rising need for the nation to sell bonds to close its funding gap.
The ECB’s December meeting minutes illustrated that the ECB will increasingly acknowledge the Euro-Zone’s robust economic performance over the coming year. Consequently, ECB interest rate futures can adjust higher and sooner in favour of the Euro. Therefore, the preference is long positions above 1.2150 with target at 1.2300. Alternatively, below 1.2150 look for downside with 1.2060 as target.
On the data slate there’s only the Euro-Zone Trade Balance. A reminder that it’s a US holiday today “Martin Luther King Day”..So most futures market will close early at 1800 GMT.
