An ordinary colony requires constant fruit, lots of water and protein sources such as worms, grasshoppers and fruit flies. Since these animals cannot roam freely in your home (so-called ant invasion), you also need a formicarium (the technical name of the ant farm).

Durable Messor barbarus is an ideal species for ant breeders for the first time. Porous concrete traps moisture and provides the humid conditions for your insects to grow. You can also inject water with a syringe through the opening behind the housing.
If you have improved your ant care skills, it's time to produce a colony. Capture a queen from where you live (the good Lasius niger is a good target since it's a mating flight in the fall), then place it and a few workers in this formary. As the population increases, you can enlarge it by combining gypsum modules.
