Formula 1 - Audi Raids and Takes From Ferrari [SPN/ENG]

in #formula13 days ago

What is happening with Audi and Ferrari is a total shame, they are not ground breaking news and in reality nothing new for Formula 1, there is no denying that Matias Binotto is playing with fire and is managing to burn Ferrari in a way that no one expected. It is incredible how this man who was fired from the Italian team is now taking the best engineers from Maranello to Audi, it is like a personal revenge but well calculated and the truth is that it is working perfectly. Wolf Zimmerman, the German who arrived in 2014 after the horrible era of hybrid engines, is leaving for Audi along with Lars Schmidt, his right hand man in the development of the 2026 engine and this is a huge blow for Ferrari because these two guys are the ones who have been working on the engine of the future for years, they know every screw, every line of code, every secret of that engine that was supposed to bring Ferrari back to glory. Binotto knows them well, he was the one who brought them to Ferrari when he was head of the engine department and now he is using them to build the Audi project from scratch, it is a master move but it is also a monumental screw up for Ferrari.

English Version - Click to DisplayWhat intrigues me most about this whole situation is that Ferrari is not surprised by this, as if they do not care that their best engineers are going to work for the competition, it is as if they were saying that there is no problem, they have other engineers just as good, but that is a total lie because these guys are not just any employee but well maybe it is a media move to give the face of little matter. Zimmerman was responsible for creating the 2022 superfast engine, the one that gave them hope at the beginning of that season before Red Bull caught up with them and reliability problems appeared, so we are talking about someone who knows how to make a competitive engine and knows all the secrets of how Ferrari works, now all that knowledge is going to Audi and that has to hurt. Enrico Cardile already left for Aston Martin, Simone Resta also left, now Zimmerman and Schmidt, and on top of that there are rumors that Diego Tondi, the head of aerodynamics may also leave for Mercedes, this is a total exodus of talent and I don't know how Ferrari is going to handle this situation.

English Version - Click to DisplayThe reality is that Binotto is showing why he was so successful at Ferrari before becoming team boss, the guy knows engineering and knows how to identify talent, now with carte blanche from Audi he is doing what he wants and is trolling Ferrari as if it was his personal backyard. Audi needed experienced engineers because developing an engine from scratch is fucking hard, especially with the new 2026 regulations that are going to have 50% electric power and 50% internal combustion, plus the use of 100% sustainable fuels, so having Zimmerman and Schmidt who already worked on advanced hybrid engines is like winning the lottery for Audi. The Germans are building their project with patience, they bought Sauber outright, they are investing brutal amounts of money, they have facilities in Germany to develop engines and now they have two of the best engine engineers on the grid, this looks very good for them in the long term even if they start slowly in 2026. Fred Vasseur says that it is normal that people come and go in Formula 1, but these are not just any mechanics, they are the leaders of Ferrari's most important project for the next few years, how can you let them leave just like that without fighting for them. It is true that they hired people from Renault after they closed their engine program and that David Sanchez is going to take more responsibilities along with Enrico Cardoni who stayed after Audi tried to take him away last year, but they still lost years of development and institutional knowledge that is not recovered overnight. Ferrari seems confident that their 2026 engine is well on track, sources say Mercedes is first in development followed by Ferrari, but how can you be sure if the guys who designed your engine left for the competition, that doesn't make sense.

English Version - Click to DisplayZimmerman is going to stay at Ferrari until he finishes his work on the 2026 engine, but he is still going to take all his knowledge to Audi, so Ferrari is going to hand over the keys of their project to the enemy, it is like giving your military strategy to the opposing army before the battle. On the other hand, Audi is doing everything perfect, Binotto knows these engineers personally, he knows how they work, he trusts them and they trust him, so the transition will be much easier and on top of that they will work in Germany where Zimmerman will feel at home instead of being in Italy where the culture is completely different. Sauber already showed improvements this year after years of being a disaster, Hulkenberg got his first podium, Bortoleto is driving well and with Audi's investment things are only going to get better, so come 2026 with Zimmerman leading the engine development they could be a giant surprise. Formula 1 is changing rapidly, teams like Aston Martin and Audi are investing crazy amounts of money, they are hiring the best talent available, and they are building serious projects to compete with the big boys, meanwhile Ferrari continues with their mentality that they are special and don't need to worry about the competition. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is talking about going back to V8 engines for 2029 with sustainable fuels and less hybrid technology, he says it would be cheaper and commercially more attractive to manufacturers, but that conversation for another time because now we need to focus on 2026.

English Version - Click to DisplayMy personal opinion is that Ferrari made a big mistake letting these engineers go without a fight, especially knowing Binotto's intentions to rebuild Audi with Italian talent, it was obvious that he was going to come after them and Ferrari should have armored them better. Now Audi has a huge competitive advantage because they have engineers who know Ferrari's secrets, know how to develop advanced hybrid engines and will work with someone who trusts them and gives them total freedom to create. Ferrari on the other hand is going to have to reinvent itself at the worst possible time, with new regulations, new challenges and without the engineers who knew the most about the project, this may result in a disaster similar to 2020 when their engine was total crap after the fuel scandal. Charles Leclerc must be thinking seriously about his future because if Ferrari doesn't fix this quickly, he may go another few years without getting close to a title again, if they will win races most likely and the guy has been waiting too long for a competitive car, Lewis Hamilton must also be worried although he already has seven championships and doesn't have as much to lose as Charles. The situation is complex but fascinating from a technical point of view, because we are going to see how two different approaches work, Ferrari trying to maintain their project with new engineers versus Audi building from scratch with proven Ferrari talent, who is going to be right we will only know when 2026 arrives and we see the engines in action.
