La ciudad apenas había cambiado en los últimos veinte años, pero cada vez le resultaba más extraña, más ajena, como si un urbanista enloquecido se complaciera en cambiarle los puntos de referencia. Hoy era el farol en el muro de piedra que estaba frente al asilo: no recordaba haberlo visto antes; o peor, lo recordaba en otra calle, mucho más lejana.
Sus pasos lo condujeron con seguridad en cada esquina y en cada cruce de calle sin necesidad de preguntarse en ningún momento sobre el camino más adecuado. Y ahora se encontraba detenido ante un farol que no debía estar allí. Sacudió la cabeza y siguió adelante. El portón entreabierto le permitió el paso. En el jardín se encontraban los ancianos, solos o con acompañantes.
No le costó trabajo distinguir a Gonzalo, sentado en su silla de ruedas, bajo la sombra de una acacia. Parecía tener mucho rato allí, como si el tiempo fluyera a su alrededor y él permaneciera detenido, anclado en una edad anterior.
Antes de acercarse, una monja lo detuvo.
–El señor Gonzalo no se ha sentido bien últimamente. Tal vez pueda sacarlo a alguna parte. El pobre pasa todo su tiempo aquí y quizás quiera ir de paseo.
–Veré qué puedo hacer –contestó, mirando apenas a la monja, y encaminándose a donde se encontraba su amigo.
Este lo recibió mirándolo fijamente, y durante un instante temió que no lo hubiera reconocido. Luego, un brillo de afirmación y alegría apareció en sus ojos.
Le entregó el paquete de frutas que había traído.
–¿Has pensado si te gustaría salir de aquí de vez en cuando? –dijo–. Dar una vuelta, visitar a alguien.
–¿Salir? ¿Para qué?
–Para lo que la gente sale: ver otras cosas, conocer, encontrarse con los amigos.
–Tú eres mi único amigo. Yo ya no tengo nada que hacer afuera.
El visitante no insistió. Pensaba en el farol en el muro de piedra. La semana pasada había sido un parque donde debía estar un edificio. En la anterior, el río corría en la dirección equivocada.
Se preguntó qué significaban estos cambios. ¿Eran, acaso, los agujeros por los que se derramaba su memoria? ¿O es que el mundo pasaba tan aprisa que nada se quedaba quieto?
Sintió un escalofrío. Alguien camina sobre mi tumba, pensó.
–Tal vez pudiera mudarme acá. ¿No te parece una buena idea? Dime, ¿no te parece una buena idea?

Excelente relato, @moliere! Haces transitar al lector entre la fantasía y el suspenso, entre la tragedia y el horror. Es una historia muy bien presentada. Los personajes, fantasmagorías de un presente lejano que conmueven profundamente.
