Berlin Gendarmenmarkt Public Domain Pictures. The Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin is a beautiful public square with three distinctive buildings on site:Französicher Dom (French Church), Deutscher Dom (German Church), and the Konzerthaus (concert hall). Undoubtedly one of Berlin’s fanciest squares. It was created in 1688 and served as a place for political events. Situated directly in front of the Konzerthaus in the centre of the square is the monumental statue of Germany’s renowned poet Friedrich Schiller. This monument was created by German sculptor Reinhold Begas and unveiled in 1871.

Due to its destruction in the Second World War, the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin was renamed for a short time in “Square of the Academy” but ultimately it was decided to rename it again in Gendarmenmarkt. The Concert Hall (Konzerthaus) was build in the middle of the square by Karl Friedrich Schinkel one of Germany’s famous architects during the early 19th century!
