Night Sun #6: The race

Nate Dielli was sweating profusely.

He was literally chasing the sun.

He joked about how it was just a game and no big deal, but now that sunset was approaching, his heart was beating and his white cotton button up shirt was damp in blotches on his chest and his back.

They’d been chasing the sunset for a while but the boat didn’t seem to move fast enough. He wanted to turbo speed all the way until noon, but he knew his boat and his engine.

He’d have to take it just a little faster than the setting sun.

A quick burst of speed would give him a temporary win - but if the engine busted, there would be no way the sails would be fast enough to avoid the night.

If he looked the other way, he could see the night, the moon, the stars, the loneliness the fright.

But he kept looking towards the sunset, traveling just fast enough to stay moving a little faster than its beams.

He looked forward to boarding the jet. They’d be flying all the way until dawn next.

He pretended dawn didn’t give him so much relief.
