Day 109: 5 Minute Freewrite: Monday - Prompt: yard sale

in #freewrite6 years ago

This story is in response @mariannewest 's prompt for day 109 of her 5-minute freewrite challenge. Today's prompt was yard sale.

Jimmy pulled up to the address listed in the paper. Oddly, there were no items visible on the lawn or in the driveway. He rechecked the address, and it appeared to be correct.

Jimmy parked his car and went to ring the doorbell. A homely-looking lady answered.

"Hello," said Jimmy, "your address was listed in the paper as having a yard sale today?"

"Oh yes, yes! The yard sale. Yes. We're selling it."

"Oh good. But selling what, exactly?" Jimmy glanced at the empty lawn and driveway.

"Well, the yard, or course. We're selling the yard. My husband, Tony, he's getting older. The yard work has just become too much for him to handle. But we still love the house. So we're selling the yard. Are you interested?"

Jimmy pivoted around, looked at the yard. A very typical yard. Mostly grass with a single healthy looking maple tree slightly left of dead-center, some shrubs along the side of the house. And a driveway of course.

"Are you selling the back yard as well? And would the driveway be included?"

"Yes to the backyard, no to the driveway. We still need somewhere to park our cars, you know."

"Ah," Replied Jimmy, "no driveway... How's street parking around here? And, I see there's a decent-sized garden shed around back. Would that be included?"

"Sure, we could throw in the garden shed. And this is a very quiet area, parking on the street is never a problem."

"Great," replied Jimmy, "would you object to me setting up residence in the shed?"

"Not so long as you keep the noise down."

"Sounds reasonable. Alright then, I think I'll take it!"

"Excellent," replied the lady, "but as to the matter of price-"

"Price is irrelevant," replied Jimmy, pulling out his checkbook. "I've been to a lot of yard sales over the years, mam, but you are the very first to be selling the actual yard. This kind of opportunity will surely never come up again. Can't pass it up."

I love these kinds of a yard sale!! And all my urban farmer friends would too - they are always looking for yards to farm!

Yes that must be why Jimmy bought it! That's very interesting, using people's yardspace for farming in urban environments. I watched something on YouTube about s guy doing that, looked like his business was doing pretty well. I would turn my own yard into a vegetable garden if it didn't have so many trees.

OMG! This was so funny! Never in a million years would I think that someone was actually selling their yard! And I had no idea that Jimmy would buy it! LOL! I really did enjoy this...thanks for the laugh! : )
