The End (Freewrite)

"Could this really be it?" thought Alice. "The proof I've been searching for for so long?"

She moved closer, past the few tufts of scrubby grass, right up to the line of yellow rocks and peered over. She still couldn't see anything except darkness.

She picked up a hefty sized rock, bouncing it in her hand a moment before tossing it over the edge. She waited but there was no answering splash or crash or anything at all. It was just gone.

"This is it!" she exclaimed and then felt a little silly.

Alice pulled out her phone and scrolled down the small list. Not her sister. Her sister had stopped taking her calls a while back and the last time Alice had tried to call the number didn't even seem to be working anymore. Her parents were still listed too, though they'd stopped asking to her for similar reasons. She just hadn't gotten around to removing their names from her contacts.

Her finger hovered over Bob's name. He'd definitely answer, since she was his boss, but he wouldn't care. She could already hear his bored monotone.

Just below him was Carl's name. It had been a while since they split up. Not that they'd been too serious, only a few dates. But she knew he'd care for sure, since her belief that the world was flat had been a major factor in their rift.

Carl's phone rang a few times but then clicked over to voicemail. At least the outgoing message reassured her it was still his number.

"Hey Carl, it's me, um, Alice. Hopefully you remember... You don't have to call me back or anything, I just wanted to tell you I found the edge of the Earth. I'm standing right next to it. Haha, no big deal, right? But really, I'll text you a pic as soon as I hang up. So, anyway...I guess that's it. Bye."

As soon as she hung up she took a series of photos, but was disappointed by how hard it was to capture the scale of the abyss. Stepping too far back just obscured it so it looked like an ordinary cliff.

There wasn't anything she could do now, since she didn't have anything else with her but a couple of energy bars and some water, so she sent off the best one to Carl. As she did she noticed her battery was running low and that it was growing chilly. In her excitement she'd traveled longer and farther into the woods than she'd meant too. Hopefully she'd make it back by nightfall.
