Monkey Business - Day 146:5 Minute Freewrite

Monkey Business

It was always a treat to go out and visit my grandparents. I got to see them and walk next door to my aunt Faye's house where my four cousins lived.

They were the lucky ones because they got to have pets, lots of pets, and different pets than I had ever been able to own. One visit sticks out in my head more than most. One day we went out to visit my aunt, she was quite the animal lover.

We walked into the living room and there she sat in her corner chair, smoking a cigarette and drinking a cup of coffee.

Suddenly there came a loud screeching sound from in the far corner. I was little and didn't expect to see a cage from floor-to-ceiling almost and inside of that cage was a spider monkey!

He was hopping around in the cage and then he began to throw food out of the cage holes.

He wanted to get out! My aunt said that he was a mischievous monkey. He bobbed his furry head and emitted another high pitched squeal. He had a very long brown tail with little tuft of black at the end.

My aunt Faye carried on her conversation with my mother, or tried to, but the monkey would have none of it! He did not care that my mother, my aunt Faye's youngest sister, had come to visit. He just wanted attention and he wanted it now! He had a bowl of tasty fruit pieces with cut up apple's and bananas.

I laughed with delight. Who gets to see a monkey in somebody's living room? I couldn't wait to get to school for Show and Tell. I felt pretty privileged at 8 years old knowing somebody in my own family owned their very own pet monkey.

Finally, one of my cousins took the monkey out of the cage. He twisted his tail around their arm and crawled up on my cousin's neck. My cousin was tall and skinny and the monkey began playing with his hair. The monkey quieted down a little bit with the attention and I was allowed to pet him. The monkey tried to get off my cousin shoulder and get down onto the floor but my cousin Ronald grabbed him up and plopped him back in the cage.

This initiated a whole new fit from the monkey who started to race around in the cage from one little bar to another and let out a high-pitched squeal.

After few minutes he was quiet and I sat down with my cousins to play. We pulled out a board game started to set up the pieces and then suddenly something came flying out of the cage and it wasn't a banana! Why, that monkey had thrown some of his dung right down through the holes in his cage on the floor and it hit our board game!! Eww!!

This was the only time I visited with my aunt while they owned that monkey.

The next time we came back she had said that they had found another home for him. I can understand why they needed to rehome that monkey. Owning a monkey isn't for everyone!

monkeys are very bad pets!!! But so cool that you had one in your family!

If that one was a good representation of them, I'll stick with dogs and cats 😊! Thanks @mariannewest

Monkeys are neat but I am pretty sure I'd pass on owning one. I can do without screaming a poo being thrown at me. lol

Great story!

I am right there with you! They were always suspect when we visited zoos after that lol! Thanks so much!

There must be something about monkeys and their ****. Anyway, I loved the story. Thanks!

Today's prompt is a picture, so we have a new challenge. Here is the prompt: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-147-5-minute-freewrite-thursday-prompt-see-below

Yeah, little critters lol! Thanks for the delivery!

I've been absolutely loving all the tales coming out of the monkey prompt! Too bad they didn't keep it :(

I was really too young to recall why the monkey had to go to a new home. :(

Wish I had a monkey pet. It would be just like having a smaller non-talking human around.

Monkeys can be mean and vicious when they don't get their own way. Friends of mine owned one for a while. I always thought that monkey was nasty. He was always the worst behaved when they had company. It came down to not having people over to their house or rehome the monkey. Guess which happened?
