This is a response to @mariannewest's freewrite response, mulch pile. The image that arose was a brief snapshot of an old man, struggling to continue with the arduous work on his farm.
Mulch pile
The spade stuck in the dirt as he toiled
– sweat dripping from his brow.
He raised a slightly shaking hand
– saw a neighbour up in the field above –
Then turned back to the potato patch.
This load won’t dig itself up.
He would like his son son to help him
– if he could.
But the farm doesn’t appeal to a young lad.
No, he’s off in the city
Making more than he could ever earn here.
The bills don’t pay themselves.

Farming is hard work and you must love the lifestyle to be able to stick with it.
