Hippie populations face a number of growing threats in the United States and across the globe.
The situation for hippies has gotten worse and worse ever since the late Carter administration. It's become less acceptable to be permanently jobless. The public desire for environmental protection and peace has declined. The moral dimension of the world has become more complex, and anti-hippie institutions like the CIA, the religious right, industry-funded think tanks, and even far-right ethnonationalists have become more entrenched and sophisticated in their tactics.
On top of this, US culture has become increasingly anti-hippie as people turn to hatred, violence, and demands for scientific evidence and concrete action over peace, love, and vague emotion-driven spirituality. Hitchhiking almost vanished as a viable form of decentralized ad-hoc transportation, replaced by other forms that make use of technology and currency, both of which exclude use by the authentic hippie.
Finally, the specter of climate change now threatens the hippie's natural habitat, a balmy forested setting with very little extreme weather.
Soon, the only remaining hippies will be those kept alive as tourist attractions in sad, cramped exhibits in now-soulless locales like San Francisco, California and Boulder, Colorado.
We cannot let our precious and vulnerable hippies perish from this Earth!
President Trump must recognize the threat to America's hippies and act swiftly to protect them. Thankfully, his willingness to over-interpret the Antiquities Act leaves an option he can take to ensure their protection.
Trump can designate several large Hippie Preserves, where hippies can thrive in peace, free of society's influence.
The ideal location for these preserves would be large tracts of the Pacific Northwest that are currently National Forests: parts of Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and if necessary, Southeast Alaska.
The Pacific Northwest is already home to many hippies, provides an environment well-suited to their needs, and is expected to be less adversely affected by climate change than other parts of the country.
Please join me in calling on President Trump to ensure that these magestic creatures are protected for future generations to appreciate.
