Hello Steeamians !
Today is a day where I review my Go game, here is one that I played today. I wanted to improve myself and gain at least the rank 9kyu in order to be a simple digit kyu player. I hope you'll enjoy this game !
Just know that this game is simply amazing ! If you like strategy game like chess, it's even a better game, simpler but deeper.
I made a post with the basic rules, you can find it here.
So I really encourage you to check out the game and here are more links that could help :
A site where you can easily play.
An amazing Youtube channel
Some playlists for beginner (FR)
A playlist for beginner (EN)
A post about Go vocabulary
Now, back to the game !

Again, I was black against a 10 kyu+ Japanese opponent and in this game, I’ll mainly be focusing on the Fuseki (the opening strategy) and on Tesuji. First, because I never really take time to speak a lot about that and secondly because the game was quite short, you’ll see.
I started as usual with a Chinese opening, nothing really special for me. However, I found that C4 for my opponent wasn’t that great because it let me the approach move E5 open and I kinda like this move. It works really well with my already placed stones.
He didn’t “protect” his corner so I take profit from that and played the move I wanted. He responded quite passively as he simply extends on the left side. I did the same and extended with H4.
I was feeling great with my extension move but at this point, if I had continued descending with him and play E2, I would felt like my move H4 was really too close to my wall. At that point, I thought ok I’m going to play there but I rather play a big move. I chose to approach his upper corner.
He extended high with D13, for me, it’s a strange move because it’s too high. You see that he has a lot of stones on the fourth line, he wants to have a lot of points but the problem is that by doing so, an invasion is still possible. To prevent that, you want to have at least a stone on the third line. For example in this situation, I would have preferred to see the stone D13 at C13.
Anyway, as I saw that he wanted points, I also took points by playing Q5, closing my corner.
At this point, he decided to invade me. Just a little point about my move Q5, here it’s correct to play on the fourth line because my stone R9 works really well with that. You can see that it’s hard to attack this position from the inside compared to his left side.
I put some pressure on his stone with N3, it’s also an extension from my corner which is starting to get big.
He jumped up, I did the same and after that exchange, he played M2. I felt like this was too small to answer it so I helped my left group while attacking his with H6. I was starting to fear for its life. There is a proverb in Go which goes like this : Don’t go fishing when your house is on fire.
After some reductions of its vital space, his group looked like this. He played the move you can see below surely thinking I was going to answer it but it’s a very small move which doesn’t threaten anything. I took the opportunity to play a move above his group, L8.
Then, he threatened to live, I didn’t agree with him and played L1 to prevent his two eyes. After the game, I re-read that sequence and it appears that playing O1 ended up with a better and easier result for me.
Once again, I ignored one of his moves and added J8 to enclosed his group. It’s starting to smell like a dead group for me at that time.
Unfortunately for me, there is a cut and he took it. Now, I need to live with my bottom group if I want to assure the kill.
Here is the result of our little fight, I only have one eye and I’m threatening to make another one but it’s easy for his to prevent it. The eye G4 isn’t an eye, it’s a false one. Obviously, he wanted to save his group so he played the killing move F6 but there is a tesuji (smart move) there waiting for me !
Just give a look at C3, let’s see if you can find out a sequence which brings back to live my group. Tell me in the comment if you find out by yourself :D
Actually, after the cut C3 and B3, a throw-in reduces his liberties and allows me to capture his 4 stones near F1.
Just to be clear, after he takes my stone, I play G1 giving him two choices. Either connect with D1 and lose his entire corner because of A2 for me or give up his 4 stones and let me live.
After that, we played some moves around his group but it was dead indeed. He resigned after that. It was a great game and I felt so good to have found that Tesuji that I wanted to share it with you.
I hope you enjoyed this little game review, tell me in the comment what do you think about this content.
