After a long time of release of Resident Evil 6. Capcom released Resident Evil 7 on January 2017 which took almost 4 years to came out after Resident Evil 6 which was released in 2013. Lot of Resident Evil fans were expecting same cast such as Chris Redfeild, Ada Wong, Claire. Specially Leon. S. Kennedy (My Most Favorite) in RE 8 but Capcom had other plans to surprise their fans and when the RE 8 trailer came out, the gamers were shocked to see 2 big changes:

  1. Story: The story of Resident Evil 8 was completely changed as compared to all previous parts of Resident Evil. This time they not just introduced a new character (Ethan Winters) who searched the abandoned haunted house after receiving a massage from his wife Mia who has been presumed dead for three years. Capcom changed the story line from viral break out or counter bio terrorism to the haunted house which is a resident of weird and horrible (Baker Family).

  2. Gameplay: As compared to all previous parts of RE. Capcom changed the gameplay from 3rd person to 1st person which was definitely a surprise because nobody could expect that kind of a change. 3rd person user interface made the game more challenging and multiplied the horror experience.

However, Chris Redfeild appeared in the end but as an Umbrella rescue member which left many questions in a gamer's mind that why is he working for Umbrella and nor for BSAA. May be we can find out in next RE game.

No, doubt that Capcom risked themselves a lot by changing things in this manner but they gave their best by providing best graphics and launching such a horrible masterpiece in virtual reality. As from the perspective of many gamers, there was nothing wrong with Resident Evil 7. The game also secured the 4th (Ranking by gamespot.com) spot in top 10 games of 2017.
